Family Day

Last night I found it difficult to sleep as my mind started to process the events of the day. Once I was finally able to doze at around 12:30am, I was awakened at 4:30am by my son having a nightmare. After settling him back down, my mind started racing again, and I lay awake until 7am when I took the baby from my wife to let her get some rest. Holding my daughter on the couch downstairs before everyone was awake, I did my best to determine what I was going to do about the situation. There's more to come with this, and it all rests on my shoulders. In my mind, this is a 'put up or shut up' moment, and I intend to 'put up.'

The rest of the day was a lot of fun. Vowing to put everything else out of my mind, I concentrated on spending time with the family, to reaffirm why I go to work every day in the first place. There's nothing quite as amazing as the unconditional love of a young child, and anyone who's experienced it should agree with me. It doesn't matter what's going on outside the walls of this house, when I come home I'm Daddy. From the endless races in a circle around the first floor, to sharing breakfast together at the table, to getting a special hug just for being me, I feel like the greatest man on earth with my kids. They are the greatest things that could have ever happened to me and I can't thank them enough for their love and support.

On a much lighter note, I stole some time to finish up the main game component of Swords & Poker. Some of the spells available to you later in the game are completely crazy, such as the Chaos spell, which turns the 4 corner cards on the grid into wildcards. Using this spell I was able to generate a Royal Flush hand, and take off a full quarter of my opponent's health in one move. The downside is it opens up the same opportunity to your opponent. Regardless, as I mentioned before, this is a game that is well worth the cost if you own an iPhone.

Better Late than Never

Day 15ish in my quest to win NaBloPoMo has me filing a late entry, due to traveling concerns.

It's way too late, or way too early, depending on how you decide to classify the time. Because the family and I packed up the minivan and traveled the 6 hours to my hometown, this entry technically is not filed the day it should be, but I hope for leniency in the judgement to keep my streak of a post a day alive. Technically I haven't gone to sleep yet, so it could count as a post for the 15th, even though the clock says otherwise. Anyway, I won't bore you with my internal arguments. Instead, I'll bore you with something else.

Having spent some time with the iPhone over the past few days, I really feel that it could be a tool used for good or for ill, when it comes to my productivity. For example, from a media sharing standpoint, I've already posted a couple of short videos via Twitvid, though they aren't anything to write home about. There's an app I downloaded, called Dragon Dictation, which I could see myself using to get some of the thoughts in my head onto the computer screen. I've also considered the use of the voice recording function to capture the ideas that float around in my head at times when they can't be written down, and conveniently are forgotten when I try to recall them later. It's small things like this that, if I integrate them correctly into my daily routine, really could provide tangible benefits down the road.

However, there's another edge to this sword. The games available on the platform can suck away my time and will to be productive faster than a jackrabbit on a date. Doodle Jump currently has its hooks in me, as well as Mass Effect Galaxy. Two distinctly different tastes, mechanics and experiences, but both provide amusement in bite-size chunks. Also loaded up and waiting for a test run are the lite versions of Poker Quest, Star Hogs, Words with Friends, and Mr. Aaaaaah! The next few days, spent in the relative peace of my parents' home, could prove to be a great place to give all of these a test drive.

My excitement over having the iPhone hasn't waned since acquiring it, instead it's gotten stronger. The possibilities for use seem endless right now, and I can only hope to figure out ways to integrate the potential benefits into my routine to augment or improve what I do now, not just for the sake of doing so. That's the big challenge facing me right now, and here's to hoping I get it right.

That's all for now, since my eyes aren't really focusing on the text anymore. Take care and see you later today!

TGI Flippin' F

This week couldn't have ended soon enough. Several nights of working until 10, my lovely daughter deciding that sleep was optional for her, and the fact that I suffered with a random night of complete insomnia makes me hope, nay pray, that this weekend is quiet and restful.

Oh wait, I have 19-month old twins. Scratch that. Let the chaos begin! :)

There will hopefully be a moment or two where I can get back to fighting crime in Arkham Asylum. I'm itching to beat a bunch of anonymous thugs senseless, or string them up from a gargoyle, or something like that. You get the picture. It's been hard working so much, knowing that the game is just sitting, lonely and unloved, in my 360. Soon we will be together again, just a few more hours...

On the upside, at least the large amount of time devoted to work allowed me to 'make some hay' in the large backlog of billable project work staring at me. It also seems that I'll be transitioning into more of a project lead, while supervising the work of at least one or two other people. Could be interesting, could be terrifying. Only time will tell, but it feels like the right move considering the direction my career is going.

Hope you all have a great weekend!
