I own an iPhone and an iPad, but I don't consider myself a member of the Cult of Apple. However, I can't help but be moved by the passing of Steve Jobs, one of the greatest tech visionaries of my time. His 2005 commencement address at Stanford is especially poignant today, so I have it here for viewing.
His beliefs and strength to follow through on those beliefs created the encompassing phenomenon of Apple. It is sad to think that his touch will no longer be felt directly on the products and direction of the company moving forward.

A Moment of Peace
For the 21st consecutive day of posting an entry to my blog, in honor of NaBloPoMo, I take just a moment to breathe.
One morning, I looked out the window of the home where I'm staying this week, and this was the sight that greeted me:

A beautiful winter landscape stretched out before me. The sky was overcast, the air was thick with falling snow, and a silence hung over everything. In all of my frantic running around, taking care of children, working to put food on the table, and enjoying the wonders technology has to offer, I had forgotten what quiet really is. Looking out over the newly-fallen snow, I took a deep breath and soaked in the scene.
This picture now serves as the wallpaper on my work laptop, in the hopes that when things are at their most frantic, when I feel like my head is going to explode, I can look at the picture and try to recapture in my head the feeling of peace that engulfed me on that day. It may only be a pipe dream, but if it can help me just once through a day or period of chaos, then it will have all been worth it.
I'll end tonight with a quote that struck me today, found on the Answers.Com Twitter account...

NaBloPoMo
It had been bouncing around in my head as a personal challenge to try to post every day for the month of January. At some point in the past year, I had read that this is a great way to condition yourself to writing daily, and that by forcing yourself to post, even the most mundane items, would form a habit. By forming this habit, removing one of the obstacles to writing, and hopefully gaining some valuable practice writing in the processthe theory holds that better material will follow.
While I was seriously contemplating this, I was alerted to National Blog Posting Month, or NaBloPoMo, in a post by a blogger who I follow (thanks, Dark Sakura!). Since there's a movement and a group of people dedicated to try to do exactly what I was considering independently, it seems like a sign that I should give it a shot. What you're reading right now is the beginning of this effort.
I know, I know, it's not exactly awe inspiring, is it? What do you expect from an engineer with no formal English, journalism or writing experience? I'm going to do my best to stick with this little exercise and stretch my writing a bit. You'll still be seeing a lot of video game related items here, but there should also be some other topics sprinkled in here and there, just to liven things up. One goal I've set for myself is to improve my vocabulary. Since I'm apparently an (ahem) adult, whether I want to be or not, it only seems wise to expand on the small base of words I know and spruce things up a bit.
That's all for now. It's getting close to the time where I turn into a pumpkin, and the kids are going to be up at 7am, whether I'm ready for them or not. For all of you out there in the same endeavor, best of luck to you, and I hope to join you all successfully at the end of the month!

What the...?
Traveling through a town for a site visit today, I passed by the following street sign:
Viscoloid Ave.
Really? Who names a street Viscoloid? Granted, it's a name that would be hard to forget, but can you imagine the poor little kids who live on that street having to fill out that name on the standardized tests. And what is a viscoloid, anyway?
TIME PASSES...
It turns out, after writing the first part of this post, I did some Internet research on viscoloid. It turns out viscoloid was a plastic used to make combs, toys and such in the early part of the 20th century, and the company that made these items was known as the Viscoloid company. Guess that answers my question. Oh well...
